Using Desmos on iPads… for the STAAR Test… Really!
Dear Desmos, (with the help of Casper Focus)… You made a liar out of me. Two short years later, @Desmos “made a liar out of me” 🙂 Watch 24:40 @ HCMS on @livestream: http://t.co/94HuPTkf2A https://t.co/Tct5xhJE1H — Cathy Yenca  (@mathycathy) April 21, 2015 Did you catch that? When asked, “What about calculators… did the iPads replace your calculators? Or do the kids need those as well?” I actually said, “The answer… Continue reading
Using Desmos on iPads… for the Algebra 1 EOC STAAR Test… Take 1
For the first time in history… (too strong?)… my Algebra 1 students excitedly embraced the opportunity to use Desmos Test Mode *AND* TI graphing calculators during their EndofCourse STAAR test this past week. In years prior, TI handheld graphing calculators were permitted, but for Algebra 1 students, having access to BOTH Desmos and a TI calculator was not an option. Last year, during a Desmos pilot with our Math 8 STAAR… Continue reading

Using Desmos on iPads… for the Math 8 STAAR Test… Take 3
This past week, we completed our third lap of using the iPad app “Desmos Test Mode” on the Math 8 STAAR test (with the option of also using a TI handheld graphing calculator). If you’d like to see what we’ve done in the past to lead up to this moment, check out this post and the included links for nutsandbolts. Most folks who get in touch are curious about how we’re securely using iPads. We “lock them… Continue reading

Using Desmos on iPads… for the Math 8 STAAR Test… Take 2
Last year, our district pioneered using the Desmos Test Mode iOS app on STAAR (state) tests. You can read about that here. For the 201516 school year, we knew that the Texas Education Agency updated its calculator policy to extend the possibility of using a tabletbased calculator not only for the Grade 8 mathematics STAAR test, but also for Algebra I, Algebra II and Biology. While my Algebra students won’t get to use Desmos Test Mode… Continue reading

Free Your Mind… and the Tech May Follow
Yenca, The Dan, Nadine Herbst, The Fenton I’m still in that mushy state between being on break and being back to school. An opportunity that helped firm up a few brain cells for me this week was a day with Team Desmos a la Dan Meyer and Michael Fenton. My biggest takeaway (and one that may help others free their minds) was this (paraphrased) proposition from Dan: What can we (math teachers) do/present/provide for our students before… Continue reading

Ending Another Year {With Desmos}
School’s Out For Summer! Leaving my classroom after the halls have cleared is a bittersweet moment. I always take a photo of it – and looking at social media the past few days, I can see I’m not the only teacher out there that snaps an empty classroom picture before leaving school. It’s symbolic for me, closing the door on another teaching chapter, and another year of memories with learners who have grown to become a… Continue reading

Using Desmos on iPads… for the Algebra 1 EOC STAAR Test… Take 2
This week, our Algebra 1 students took their STAAR EndofCourse exam. This round marks year 2 of Algebra 1 students being permitted to use both a TI handheld graphing calculator and the Desmos Test Mode iPad app in light of this TEA calculator policy change that went into effect last school year. An annual tradition for my Math 8 students (who recently experienced year 3 of TI and Desmos Test Mode access for state testing) and now, my Algebra… Continue reading
Desmos, Nearpod, ThingLink, and the Kitchen Sink
Often, after folks use versatile digital tools in isolation, the natural progression is to smash them together to create new, unique learning experiences for kids. This post features several multiapping resources and ideas that you’re sure to extend and improve… and when you do, please share back! 🙂 A recent Nearpod update enables the seamless integration of prepared Desmos links within Nearpod lessons using the URL content tool… Continue reading
Using Kahoot! Challenges and Desmos BREAKOUT to Revisit and Review… and a shoutout to #DesmosInTexas
My Math 8 students took their state STAAR test this past week (SIDE NOTE: This testing season marks lap#5 of my students using the Desmos Test Mode app on iPads as well as a TI graphing calculator while taking the STAAR test… more about that in a plethora of past posts ). For a unique testreview twist, this year was my first opportunity to share *ALL* of the Math 8 Kahoots! I created last school year for Math_by_Kahoot with my kiddos en… Continue reading

Desmos Pet House: A Linear {and NotSoLinear} Project
It all started with this tweet, and the rest is mashup #MTBoS history. Thanks to all who shared and shaped the final draft of this project! Hey #MTBoS #iteachmath There are so many amazing examples of @desmos graphing projects floating around! Has anyone designed a rubric or checklist you really like to use? Hoping to have Ss work on this (in part at least) in my absence, so a resource would help! Thx for all you do! — Cathy Yenca… Continue reading
