Using Desmos on iPads… for the STAAR Test… Really!
…ise ways to tweak Desmos to be a testfriendly tool, resulting in the FREE Desmos Test Mode app. The folks at Desmos are such a pleasure to work with, even responding to a passionate student of mine who contacted them in hopes of employment with Desmos some day! Yes, one of my 7th graders loves Desmos SO MUCH that he’s looking for ways to connect with them already. Thank you, Desmos, for responding to him and acknowledging and encouraging his exci… Continue reading
Using Desmos on iPads… for the Algebra 1 EOC STAAR Test… Take 1
…Desmos. Name a few math lesson topics for which you like using Desmos more than the TI Graphing Calculator. Algebra Calculator Survey Yenca 201516 Note: These Algebra students WERE the Math 8 students last year who were able to use Desmos on their Math 8 STAAR too, so we’re talking about a generation of kids who have been using Desmos for two years. I wonder if that also has an impact on their enthusiasm? *Update* Desmos Test Mode is also availa… Continue reading

Using Desmos on iPads… for the Math 8 STAAR Test… Take 2
…ebra I, Algebra II and Biology. While my Algebra students won’t get to use Desmos Test Mode for their STAAR EOC (endofcourse) exam until May, my Math 8 students completed their math testing yesterday. Students had the option of using Desmos Test Mode, a TIgraphing calculator… or BOTH tools if they preferred. Today, I gave my Math 8 students the same survey I gave to my Math 8 students last year. I asked three questions: In general, which tool d… Continue reading

Free Your Mind… and the Tech May Follow
…ght in Nearpod, and you’ll be able to project the Overlay feature from the Desmos teacher panel in teacher.desmos.com so kids can see it. Once the Desmos part is done, advance the Nearpod to present the last two openended questions to students. Or, you could throw a poll question here, or any other of Nearpod’s many tools. Magic. Okay… so maybe that last example was a little more elaborate, but my point is… I tried something new, and I didn’t try… Continue reading

A Fork is not a Spoon
…ce we share the same time and space, whether inperson or virtually, I use Desmos activities to drive our live lessons. For us, Desmos is an experience, not a summative assessment. If students were to join a Desmos activity, and ask that ageold question, “Is this GRADED?” it would break my heart a little. They never ask me this because it’s not something we’ve ever done. Yes, we teachers are expected to put grades in our grading software programs… Continue reading

Using Desmos on iPads… for the Algebra 1 EOC STAAR Test… Take 2
…esson topics for which you like using the TI Graphing Calculator more than Desmos Test Mode. Name a few math lesson topics for which you like using Desmos Test Mode more than the TI Graphing Calculator. Though my Algebra 1 sample size this year is very small (36 students to be exact) this round marks the first time that not a single student answered the first question by saying they prefer the TI calculator…! This hasn’t necessarily been the case… Continue reading

I created Desmos Classes when the option became available in recent months… and again… I don’t think I’m using these classes in a conventional way either, ha! I created my Desmos classes by class period, but I do not “assign” Desmos activities to integrate with Google Classr… Continue reading
